When Grammy Award-winning R&B singer and songwriter, John Legend said in his song, ‘All Of Me’ that ‘Love your curves and all your edges, all your perfect imperfections’, many ladies realised he knew what he was talking about. That’s because as beautiful as your hair may be, edges are considered by some as one of the imperfections of nature.

As a woman who loves her hair, edges are one of the ultimate ways to pull your hair game together. Hair edges, also commonly known as baby hairs or swooped edges, are the short hairs found in textured hair types in the hairline area. For many years, women of colour have used these hairs to create stunning hairstyles that many have considered to be works of art.

For this reason, styling your baby hairs,

which is often referred to as “laying your edges” or “slicking” them down has become a trend for the modern woman.

These hairs are effectively styled using an ‘edge control’ product and toothbrush (or other fine styling instruments).

How to edge your hair Using a toothbrush has been a long-time hack in the beauty world to slick baby hairs down. For starters, you always want to separate your edges from your hair and slick them down. Use a fine comb to comb these hairs out and slick them down in the direction you’d like to style them. Make sure you use a comb that won’t snag on the hairs and cause further damage and use water if needed.

Now comes the fun part, swooping and styling. Creating the shape of your swoops should be natural to your hairline and you should use the natural bristles on an edge brush (toothbrush). While creating the shape, use an edge control of your choice to mould the hair into the swooping shape. Choosing between a lighter or heavier edge control is solely based on the texture of your hair. The thing about soft curly hair is that it’s the easiest hair texture to use edge control on. However, for coarser hair, heavier edge control is needed.

For finishing touches, take the pointed tip of your preferred hair tool and go over the moulding to define the shape. Using the pointed tip will not interfere with the shape you’re created with the brush bristles and the fineness of the tip allows you to add and define swoops a little more.

Use hairspray for an indefinite hold. This step is optional and a lot of times depends on the texture of hair you have and the type of style you’re going for but a freeze spray can allow your edges to have just a little extra moulding and hold it in place. You may also choose to tie a band tight around the edges to let it form for a few minutes.
