I’m terrified of the dentist. Truly terrified. To the point where I’ll do pretty much anything to avoid having to visit a dentist’s office other than for hygienist appointments and put-it-off-for-long-enough check-ups – so my at-home dental hygiene is pretty top notch.
I floss, I tongue scrape, I brush, I mouthwash; I’ve even been known to do a five-minute oil swilling every now and again. But I also try to make my daily lifestyle habits as sustainable and planet-friendly as possible, which can actually be quite tricky when it comes to dental care.
It is in my home, friend, and ideally in yours too. So much of oral hygiene products come packaged in plastic, or other non-recyclable materials. A few months ago, I made the switch to Georganics mouthwash tablets housed in a glass jar, rather than the usual single-use plastic bottle, and started using a mix of Brushd bamboo interdental brushes and Cocofloss’ refillable floss cases.
My husband does the same. When it comes to my son, who’s just under two, we use Truthpaste botanical toothpaste in sweet orange (the mint flavour did go down well) and Wild & Stone bamboo brushes.
The fly in the ointment? My plastic electric toothbrush, and its heads, which my husband and I change every 3-4 months but aren’t recyclable. Given two-thirds of UK adults use an electric toothbrush, that is a serious amount of brush heads going to landfill. So when I was offered the new Brushd Electric toothbrush to trial, I was a keen bean.
Well, since you ask, it’s twofold.
First, the brush (and its kit) comes in 100% recyclable packaging, unlike other mainstream brands where it’s all about the plastic casings.
But the sustainable gift that keeps on giving is the brush heads; they’re completely recyclable, and not only that, they come with a pre-paid compostable pouch, so you can just stick your used heads in, post them back to Brushd and they’ll deal with them properly, separating them by composition, shredding and then melting ready to be made into new products. Huzzah.
Eco credentials aside, any toothbrush needs to, well, clean your teeth. Happily, the Brushd Electric Toothbrush did. Other than feeling pretty loud and reverberating round my head as I brushed, its effectiveness stood up to my old electric toothbrush that I’ve been using without a hitch for years.
There’s three different settings - Clean, Sensitive and White - and a timer. The one thing I’d have liked is a sensor alert for when I’m pressing too hard against my gums, as this is something my dentist has flagged to be careful about.
A plus, though not a must, is the fact that the toothbrush also looks way better than any others I’ve used before – it’s proudly displayed in its wall holder on my bathroom wall.
